Overview

Apolipoprotein B (ApoB) is the primary protein component of low-density lipoprotein (LDL). The amount of cholesterol contained within LDL varies, but each LDL contains exactly one ApoB protein. Therefore, ApoB is a more reliable indicator of circulating LDL compared to LDL cholesterol .ApoB is strongly associated with increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD).

What is the Apolipoprotein B Test ?

Apolipoprotein B (ApoB) is the primary protein component of Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL). The amount of Cholesterol contained within LDL varies, but each LDL contains exactly one ApoB protein. Therefore, ApoB is a more reliable indicator of circulating LDL compared to LDL Cholesterol. ApoB is strongly associated with increased risk of developing Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) and often outperforms LDL-C at predicting risk of Coronary Heart Disease.

What is the Purpose of the Apolipoprotein B Test ?

This test is advised for following purposes:

Assess Cardiovascular Risk:

  • ApoB is a marker for the number of atherogenic particles in the blood, which play a direct role in plaque formation and artery blockage. Elevated ApoB levels indicate an increased risk of atherosclerosis, Heart attack, and Stroke.
Provide a Comprehensive Lipid Profile:
  • Unlike traditional LDL Cholesterol tests, the ApoB test measures the total number of LDL and other harmful particles, offering a more precise evaluation of Cardiovascular risk.
Guide Treatment Decisions:
  • The ApoB test helps determine the need for and intensity of interventions, such as lifestyle changes or lipid-lowering medications like statins.
Monitor Effectiveness of the Treatment:
  • Regular ApoB testing can track the effectiveness of treatments aimed at lowering Cholesterol and reducing atherogenic Lipoprotein levels.
Diagnose Specific Lipid Disorders:
  • Used to identify and monitor genetic or acquired Lipid disorders, such as familial Hypercholesterolemia or mixed hyperlipidemia.
Refine Risk Assessment in Complex Cases:
  • ApoB is particularly useful in individuals with discordant Lipid levels (E.g., low LDL Cholesterol but high ApoB) or in those with Metabolic conditions like Diabetes or Obesity.

When is an Apolipoprotein B Test Recommended ?

The following are a few signs or conditions that could indicate the need for a Apolipoprotein B Test:
  • Family History of Heart Disease
  • Personal History of Early Heart Disease
  • High Cholesterol Levels That Don’t Improve
  • Atherosclerosis
  • Unexplained Stroke or Heart Attack
  • High Blood Pressure

Preparation for Apolipoprotein B Test

  • Unless otherwise directed by your doctor, there is no need for you to make any special preparations before the Apolipoprotein B Test.
  • Other blood tests can be carried out in addition to a Apolipoprotein B Test. If your doctor advises you to have multiple tests at once, they may ask you to fast for a specific period of time prior to a blood test.
  • Drink adequate water before sample collection.
  • Avoid vigorous physical activity before the sample collection.
  • Follow the preparatory instructions as guided by your doctor.

What is the Cost of the Apolipoprotein B Test ?

The Price of a Apolipoprotein B Test is Rs. 610. However, cost of the test may fluctuate depending on following factors:
  • Other tests advised along with Apolipoprotein B Test
  • Offers or discounts
  • Empanelment of the patient

Components of Apolipoprotein B Test

  • Apolipoprotein B: It is a protein that plays a vital role in the Metabolism of Lipids. It is also the main protein constituent of Lipoproteins such as very low-Density Lipoprotein (VLDL) and low-density Lipoprotein (LDL, the “bad cholesterol”).

Interpreting the Apolipoprotein B Test Results

The normal levels of Apolipoprotein B vary, but generally:
  • Adults:
Desirable: < 90 mg/dL
Borderline High: 90–119 mg/dL
High Risk: ≥ 120 mg/dL
  • Children and Adolescents: < 110 mg/dL
Key Notes:
Lower ApoB levels are associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease.
Higher levels indicate an increased number of atherogenic lipoprotein particles and a higher risk of conditions like atherosclerosis.

How is the Apolipoprotein B Test Done ?

The Blood Sample for Apolipoprotein B Test is taken in following steps:
  • The area where the needle will be inserted to take your blood is cleaned with an antiseptic alcohol wipe. The hollow on the inside side of the elbow or the tip of the finger are the most common sites for this.
  • A tourniquet or a band is tied around your upper arm to facilitate the access to the vein in your arm.
  • A needle is used to puncture your vein. The blood sample is collected into a test tube attached to the needle. The needle may cause a small pinch or sting when it is inserted.
  • Once the vial or test tube is filled, the blood sample collection for the test is finished and the needle is taken out.
  • Finger pressure is applied on the puncture site to stop the bleeding and the band aid is applied at the site.
