A Prothrombin Time (PT) Test is a blood test that measures how long your blood takes to clot. It helps doctors evaluate bleeding disorders, liver function, vitamin K deficiency, and monitor blood-thinning medicines like warfarin

Doctors usually recommend a PT/INR test to monitor anticoagulant therapy, investigate unusual bleeding or bruising, check clotting disorders, or before surgeries and medical procedures.

Fasting is generally not mandatory for a PT test, although overnight fasting may sometimes be preferred. Patients should also inform the doctor about any blood-thinning medicines or supplements they are taking.

The normal Prothrombin Time range is usually around 10–13 seconds, while a normal INR for people not on anticoagulants is typically 0.8–1.2. The target INR may be higher for patients taking blood thinners.
