Overview

Prothrombin time is used to identify a deficiency of one or more of the clotting factors of the extrinsic coagulation system (I, II, V, VII, X) due to hereditary deficiency or acquired conditions such as liver disease, vitamin K deficiency, or a specific factor inhibitor. Monitoring patients on oral anticoagulant therapy to maintain a patient in a safe therapeutic range. The prothrombin time is also reported as the INR (International Normalized Ratio), based on the ISI (International Sensitivity Index)

What is Prothrombin Time ?

Prothrombin Time test is used to identify a deficiency of one or more of the clotting factors of the extrinsic coagulation system (I, II, V, VII, X) due to hereditary deficiency or acquired conditions such as liver disease, vitamin K deficiency, or a specific factor inhibitor. Monitoring patients on oral anticoagulant therapy to maintain a patient in a safe therapeutic range. The prothrombin time test is also reported as the INR (International Normalized Ratio), based on the ISI (International Sensitivity Index).

What is the Cost of Prothrombin Time

The Price of a Prothrombin Time Test is Rs. 250. However, cost of the test may fluctuate depending on following factors:
  • Other tests advised along with prothrombin time test
  • Offers or discounts
  • Empanelment of the patient

What is the Purpose of the Prothrombin Time ?

  • Check the effectiveness of Anticoagulants: If you take the blood thinner warfarin, your prothrombin time is often monitored. The prothrombin time is presented in this case as an international normalized ratio (INR). In case your blood clotting ability is a concern, your doctor might suggest a prothrombin time test prior to surgery.
  • Check for Liver condition: To investigate liver disease, the prothrombin time test may also be performed. It is amongst one of several exams used to screen liver transplant candidates. The model for end-stage liver disease (MELD), which is the name of this screening, is a scoring system used to determine the severity of chronic liver disease.
  • For Preliminary Testing: You may require additional testing to confirm your condition if your doctor believes you may have additional health issues, such as liver problems or a bleeding disorder.
  • MakeSurgical Plans: Before surgery, your surgeon might check that your blood is clotting normally to make sure you won't lose too much blood.
  • Diagnose clotting and bleeding issues: PT tests assist medical professionals in identifying potential causes of excessive blood loss. Certain symptoms, such as heavy nosebleeds, cuts that don't stop bleeding, or unexplained or frequent bruises, can be explained by making a diagnosis for these conditions.

When is the Prothrombin Time Recommended ?

If you have or suspected to have following conditions, then Prothrombin Time Test is advised:
  • Liver Disease
  • Vitamin K Deficiency
  • Bleeding Disorders
  • Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) or Pulmonary Embolism (PE)
  • Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC)
  • Pre-surgical Screening
  • Chronic Kidney Disease

Preparation for Prothrombin Time

  • Unless otherwise directed by your doctor, there is no need for you to make any special preparations before the prothrombin time test.
  • Other blood tests can be carried out in addition to a PT. If your doctor advises you to have multiple tests at once, they may ask you to fast for a specific period of time prior to a blood test.
  • Drink adequate water before sample collection.
  • Avoid vigorous physical activity before the sample collection.
  • Follow the preparatory instructions as guided by your doctor.
