Overview

During Ejaculation the penis releases a viscous substance called Semen. Sperm which carry Genetic material essential for reproduction are present in Semen. Males and anyone who produces Sperm may be at higher risk of Infertility due to specific Sperm issues. Couples who struggle to conceive or maintain a Pregnancy are said to be Infertile. Around 10% of people who produce Sperm may be Infertile or have difficulties getting their partner Pregnant. A set of tests used to evaluate Sperm and Semen is called a Semen Analysis. For a variety of reasons such as determining Fertility or verifying the success of a vasectomy doctors may advise a Semen Analysis. The specimen should be delivered to the lab within 1 hour of collection to ensure accurate results. Condoms are not acceptable for sample collection. Patients are advised to refrain from Ejaculation for 2 to 7 days (With 3 days being ideal) before the test. The Semen sample must be collected by Masturbation immediately prior to submitting the specimen. The following details will help you understand about the best Semen Analysis in Jaipur.

What is the Semen Analysis ?

Semen is composed of Spermatozoa suspended in seminal Fluid (Plasma). The function of the seminal fluid is to provide Nutrition and volume for conveying the Spermatozoa to the endocervical mucus. Male Infertility can be affected by a number of causes. Chief among these is a decrease in the number of viable Sperm. Other causes include Sperm with abnormal Morphology and abnormalities of the seminal fluid.

What is the Cost of a Semen Analysis ?

The Price of an Semen Analysis is ₹400. However, cost of the test may fluctuate depending on following factors:
  • Other tests advised along with Semen Analysis
  • Offers or discounts
  • Empanelment of the patient

What is the Purpose of the Semen Analysis ?

This test is most often advised to assess a male's or any Sperm producer's Fertility. Semen analysis can also be used to evaluate the outcomes of a Vasectomy. Around three months following a Vasectomy, doctors can perform a Semen Analysis to make sure there is no Sperm in the Semen, indicating that the patient is no longer Fertile.

When is an Semen Analysis Recommended ?

If you have following conditions, then Semen Analysis is advised:
  • Failing to make your partner conceive for an extended period (one year) without success
  • Concerns regarding low sperm count or motility issues
  • Painful or difficult ejaculation
  • Noticeable decrease in semen volume
  • Persistent testicular discomfort, swelling, or lumps
  • Decreased libido
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Known history of male infertility or recurrent pregnancy loss
  • Conditions like varicocele, diabetes, or previous surgeries (e.g., vasectomy or testicular surgery)
  • Exposure to harmful chemicals, radiation, or any genetic concerns that may affect fertility
  • Difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection, affecting reproductive ability
  • After undergoing surgeries like vasectomy reversal or treatments related to reproductive health

Components of Semen Analysis

  • Semen Analysis: During a Semen Analysis, key parameters such as Semen volume, color, consistency, pH, and chemical makeup are measured. A microscope is used to assess Sperm count, concentration, motility (Both progressive and non-progressive), and Morphology (Normal Sperm shape). Abnormalities like Sperm agglutination, immature Germ Cells, or the presence of White Blood Cells (Leukocytes) are also noted, providing a comprehensive evaluation of male Fertility.

Interpreting the Semen Analysis Results

According to the Research, the chances of making your partner Pregnant is lower in people with the following results from a Semen Analysis:
  • Semen volume: 1.5 milliliters (mL) or less
  • Total sperm count: 39 million sperm per sample or less
  • Sperm concentration: 15 million sperm per mL or less
  • Sperm motility (total): 40% or less
  • Sperm morphology: 4% or less of sperm has a normal shape
  • Semen pH: 7.2 or lower
  • Leukocytes: More than 1 million

Preparation for Semen Analysis

  • Refrain from ejaculation for 2-5 days before the test to ensure an optimal sperm sample.
  • Do not consume alcohol, recreational drugs, or medications that may affect sperm production, motility, or quality, at least 48 hours before the sample collection.
  • Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to the test.
  • Avoid using lubricants during sample collection, as they can interfere with sperm motility.
  • Follow all the preparatory instructions as guided by your doctor

How is the Semen Analysis Done ?

  • The patient is typically asked to produce a semen sample through masturbation, which should be done in a private, sterile room at a clinic or laboratory
  • It is crucial that the sample is collected in a sterile container provided by the medical facility to avoid contamination, as even minor contamination can affect the results
  • The patient must follow the clinic’s guidelines to ensure proper collection, which usually involves no use of lubricants, as they can interfere with the sperm’s motility
  • If the patient is unable to produce the sample on-site, they may be instructed to collect it at home and deliver it to the lab within 30 to 60 minutes, keeping the sample at body temperature during transport
