Overview

The percentage of Transferrin a Protein that binds and carries iron in the bloodstream that is saturated with iron is determined by the Transferrin Saturation Test also called the Iron Saturation Test. This test is essential for determining the bodys iron levels and aids in the diagnosis of iron-related illnesses such Hemochromatosis (Iron excess) iron deficiency Anemia and other metabolic diseases. The test determines the bodys iron utilization efficiency by determining the ratio of iron bound to Transferrin. In order to provide a thorough picture of an individuals iron status and help doctors customize the right Therapies or interventions it is often carried out in conjunction with other Iron studies such as Serum Iron and Ferritin assays. No specific preparation required before this test. The technician will draw Blood from your Arms Vein or Finger tip for sample collection. The following details will help you understand about the best Transferrin Saturation Test in Jaipur.

What is the Transferrin Saturation Test ?

Transferrin is the iron transport protein in Serum. In cases of iron deficiency, the degree of Transferrin Saturation appears to be an extremely sensitive indicator of functional iron depletion. The ferritin levels are depressed when there is a deficiency of storage iron. In sideropenia, an iron deficiency can be excluded if the serum transferrin concentration is low, as in inflammation or less commonly, in cases of ascorbic acid deficiency. In screening for hereditary hemochromatosis, transferrin saturation provides a better indication of the homozygous genotype than does ferritin. Transferrin saturation in conjunction with ferritin gives a conclusive prediction of the exclusion of iron overloading in patients with chronic liver disease. Ref. value: 200-360 mg/dL. Serum iron, total iron-binding capacity (TIBC), and percent saturation are useful only in screening for chronic iron overload diseases, particularly hereditary hemochromatosis. Although serum iron, TIBC, and percent saturation are widely used for the diagnosis of iron deficiency, serum ferritin is a much more sensitive and reliable means of demonstrating iron deficiency. In hereditary hemochromatosis, serum iron is usually above 150 mcg/dL and percent saturation exceeds 60%. In advanced iron overload states, the percent saturation often exceeds 90%.

What is the Purpose of the Transferrin Saturation Test ?

This test is advised for following analysis:
  • Diagnosing Iron Deficiency: Low transferrin saturation indicates insufficient iron stores in the body, which can help diagnose iron deficiency anemia.
  • Identifying Iron Overload: Elevated transferrin saturation levels can suggest iron overload disorders, such as hemochromatosis, where the body absorbs and stores excessive iron.
  • Monitoring Iron Therapy: It helps track the effectiveness of iron supplementation or treatments for conditions like anemia.
  • Assessing Iron Metabolism: The test provides a clearer picture of how efficiently the body is using available iron, guiding decisions on further testing or treatment.

When is an Transferrin Saturation Test Recommended ?

If you have following symptoms or conditions, then Transferrin Saturation Test is advised:
  • Chronic Fatigue/tiredness
  • Dizziness
  • Weakness
  • Headaches
  • Pale skin (pallor)

Preparation for Transferrin Saturation Test

There is no special preparation required before the Transferrin Saturation Test.
  • Other blood tests can be carried out in addition to an Transferrin Saturation Test. If your doctor advises you to have multiple tests at once, they may ask you to fast for a specific period of time prior to a blood test.
  • Drink adequate water before sample collection.
  • Follow the preparatory instructions as guided by your doctor.

What is the Cost of a Transferrin Saturation Test ?

The Price of an Transferrin Saturation Test is Rs. 750. However, cost of the test may fluctuate depending on following factors:
  • Other tests advised along with Transferrin Saturation Test
  • Offers or discounts
  • Empanelment of the patient

Components of Transferrin Saturation Test

  • Transferrin Saturation: It measures how well iron attaches to transferrin and other proteins in the blood.

Interpreting the Transferrin Saturation Test Results

Disease Transferrin Saturation
Iron Deficiency Low
Hemocromatosis/Hemosiderosis High
Chronic Illness Low/Normal
Hemolytic Anemia High
Sideroblastic Anemia High
Iron Poisoning High

How is the Transferrin Saturation Test Done ?

The Blood Sample for Transferrin Saturation Test is taken in following steps:
  • The area where the needle will be inserted to take your blood is cleaned with an antiseptic alcohol wipe. The hollow on the inside side of the elbow or the tip of the finger are the most common sites for this.
  • A tourniquet or a band is tied around your upper arm to facilitate the access to the vein in your arm.
  • A needle is used to puncture your vein. The blood sample is collected into a test tube attached to the needle. The needle may cause a small pinch or sting when it is inserted.
  • Once the vial or test tube is filled, the blood sample collection for the test is finished and the needle is taken out.
  • Finger pressure is applied on the puncture site to stop the bleeding and the band aid is applied at the site.
