Description

Microscopic examination of sputum is used in identifying Paragonimus westermani eggs, Strongyloides stercoralis larvae, Ascaris lumbricoides larvae, hookworm larvae, and rarely Entamoeba histolytica. Sputum should be obtained from the lower respiratory passages rather than a sample consisting mainly of saliva.
