The composition of urinary stones may vary from a simple crystal to a complex mixture containing several different species of crystals. The composition of the nidus (center) may be entirely different from that of the peripheral layers. Kidney stone disease is a common disease with multifactorial etiopathogenesis. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) is a technique to determine the composition of a stone with respect to the nature and percentage of compounds present in the stone. This technique recognizes small fractions of multiple components as percentages, present in a stone whereas conventional methods recognizes only commonly occurring stone components. The routine, easy and rapid measurements give unambiguous information about the stone composition.
