Overview

Creatinine is the product of creatine metabolism. It is a measure of renal function and elevated levels are observed in patients typically with 50% or greater impairment of renal function.

What is the Creatinine Test ?

Creatinine is the product of creatine metabolism. It is a measure of renal function and elevated levels are observed in patients typically with 50% or greater impairment of Renal function.

Components of Creatinine Test

  • Creatinine: The Kidneys remove creatinine, a waste product produced by regular muscle metabolism. Since elevated levels can signify impaired renal filtration, measuring creatinine levels in the blood aids in the evaluation of Kidney function.

Interpreting the Creatinine Test Results

Your age, level of activity, muscle mass, and diet will all affect the normal range of your creatinine levels. Your levels remain stable over time if you have good health status. Abnormal or single high creatinine test results may not help in diagnosing a specific condition. In this situation your doctor may advise you to take a few more tests to reach an accurate diagnosis.

High Creatinine levels may indicate:

  • Kidney disease or injury
  • Kidney infection
  • Poor blood flow to the kidneys
  • Blockage in urinary system
  • Kidney failure
  • Heart failure
  • Diabetes

Elevated blood creatinine does not always indicate a renal issue. Possible causes include dehydration, muscular dystrophy, disorders and injuries of the muscles, intense physical exercise, and a diet high in meat. Certain pregnancy-related health conditions might also cause increases in creatinine.

Although rare, low creatinine levels may indicate:

  • Malnutrition
  • Nerve disorder
  • Muscle loss from aging
  • Serious liver disease

What is the Purpose of the Creatinine Test ?

Creatinine Test is advised for following purposes:
  • Screening: A Creatinine Test may be done to try to identify a problem early if you are at a higher risk of developing renal issues.
  • Diagnosis: It helps in identifying the cause of symptoms including Fatigue, poor appetite, changes in Urine, and Foot swelling that may be linked to Renal issues. A measurement of Creatinine may also be included in a panel of tests for more general symptoms or when evaluating you in the emergency room.
  • Monitoring: An assessment of Creatinine levels can provide insight into the potential course of Kidney disease. Kidney-related adverse effects from prescribed drugs can also be monitored via renal function tests.

When is a Creatinine Test Recommended ?

Creatinine tests may be advised to check your Kidney health as part of a routine checkup. If you are experiencing symptoms of Kidney disease, then also this test may be advised.

Symptoms may include:

  • Swelling in the hands and feet or puffy eyelids
  • Dry skin
  • Itching
  • Numbness
  • Fatigue
  • Change in urges to urinate (pee)
  • Blood in urine
  • Foamy urine
  • Loss of appetite and weight loss
  • Muscle cramps
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Shortness of breath
  • Sleep problems
  • Trouble in thinking clearly
Even if you aren't experiencing any symptoms, you may still be at high risk of developing Kidney disease. Early on, Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), also known as long-term Kidney disease, often exhibits no symptoms. The following factors raise your risk of Kidney disease:
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Family health history of kidney disease, diabetes, or high blood pressure
  • Heart disease
  • Age above 50 years
  • Smoking
  • Obesity

Preparation for Creatinine Test

  • Unless otherwise directed by your doctor, there is no need for you to make any special preparations before the Creatinine Test.
  • Other blood tests can be carried out in addition to a Creatinine Test. If your doctor advises you to have multiple tests at once, they may ask you to fast for a specific period of time prior to a blood test.
  • Drink adequate water before sample collection.
  • Follow the preparatory instructions as guided by your doctor.

How is the Creatinine Test Done ?

The Blood Sample for Creatinine Test is taken in following steps:
  • The area where the needle will be inserted to take your blood is cleaned with an antiseptic alcohol wipe. The hollow on the inside side of the elbow or the tip of the finger are the most common sites for this.
  • A tourniquet or a band is tied around your upper arm to facilitate the access to the vein in your arm.
  • A needle is used to puncture your vein. The blood sample is collected into a test tube attached to the needle. The needle may cause a small pinch or sting when it is inserted.
  • Once the vial or test tube is filled, the blood sample collection for the test is finished and the needle is taken out.
  • Finger pressure is applied on the puncture site to stop the bleeding and the band aid is applied at the site.
  • Blood collection typically takes less than five minutes.
  • Temporary throbbing and bruising, as well as mild discomfort or stinging when the needle is inserted, are all possible side effects of a blood draw.
