Overview
The Serum Phosphorus test measures the level of phosphorus in the blood, an essential mineral for bone formation, energy storage, and cellular function. Phosphorus levels are regulated by the kidneys and influenced by factors such as diet, kidney function, and hormone levels. Abnormal phosphorus levels may indicate issues related to bone health, kidney disease, or imbalances in calcium and vitamin D, making this test valuable in assessing metabolic and bone-related conditions.
What is the Phosphorus Test ?
Of the Phosphorus contained in the body, 88% is localized in bone in the form of Hydroxyapatite. Serum contains approximately 2.5 to 4.5 mg/dL of inorganic Phosphate. Serum Phosphate concentrations are dependent on dietary intake and regulation by hormones such as Parathyroid Hormone (PTH) and 1, 25 vitamin D, and systemic acid base status. Hypophosphatemia may have 4 general causes: shift of phosphate from extracellular to intracellular, renal phosphate wasting, loss from the gastrointestinal tract, and loss from intracellular stores. Hyperphosphatemia is usually secondary to an inability of the kidneys to excrete phosphate and is common in patients with chronic kidney disease stage 4 or greater. Acute hyperphosphatemia can occur as a result of tissue breakdown such as rhabdomyolysis.
What is the Purpose of the Phosphorus Test ?
In order to help diagnose and/or monitor treatment of a variety of conditions that result in calcium and Phosphorus imbalances, Phosphorus tests are often advised in conjunction with other tests, such as those for calcium, Parathyroid Hormone (PTH), and/or
vitamin D.
When is a Phosphorus Test Recommended ?
The following are a few signs that could indicate an Phosphorus Test:
- Anxiety
- Fatigue
- Irregular Breathing
- Irritability
- Joint Stiffness
- Numbness
- Weakness
- Changes in Body Weight
Preparation for Phosphorus Test
It is necessary to fast overnight prior to taking a Phosphorus Test, which means you can only drink water but cannot eat for this time period. Ask your doctor if you need to temporarily stop taking any of your regular medications because they may have an impact on the results of this test.
What is the Cost of the Phosphorus Test ?
The Price of a Phosphorus Test is Rs. 180. However, cost of the test may fluctuate depending on following factors:
- Other tests advised along with Phosphorus Test
- Offers or discounts
- Empanelment of the patient
Components of Phosphorus Test
- Phosphorus: Phosphorus is one of the minerals that is present in our body. It is required to build strong bones and teeth. It also plays an important role in nerve signaling and muscle contraction. Kidney, Liver, and certain bone diseases can cause abnormal Phosphorus levels.
Interpreting the Phosphorus Test Results
Normal values of Blood Phosphorus levels range from 2.8 to 4.5 mg/dL in adults and 4.0 to 7.0 mg/dL in children.
Common causes of High Phosphorus levels:
- Diabetic ketoacidosis
- Hypoparathyroidism
- Kidney damage or failure
- Liver disease
- Excessive vitamin D
- Excessive phosphate in your diet
- Certain medicines such as laxatives that have phosphate in them
Common causes of Low Phosphorus levels:
- Alcoholism
- Hypercalcemia
- Primary hyperparathyroidism
- Scanty dietary intake of phosphate
- Very poor nutrition
- Scanty vitamin D intake
How is the Phosphorus Test Done ?
The Blood Sample for Phosphorus Test is taken in following steps:
- The area where the needle will be inserted to take your blood is cleaned with an antiseptic alcohol wipe. The hollow on the inside side of the elbow or the tip of the finger are the most common sites for this.
- A tourniquet or a band is tied around your upper arm to facilitate the access to the vein in your arm.
- A needle is used to puncture your vein. The blood sample is collected into a test tube attached to the needle. The needle may cause a small pinch or sting when it is inserted.
- Once the vial or test tube is filled, the blood sample collection for the test is finished and the needle is taken out.
- Finger pressure is applied on the puncture site to stop the bleeding and the band aid is applied at the site.
