Overview
The FSH (serum) test measures follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) levels in the blood, which is essential for reproductive function. In women, FSH regulates the menstrual cycle and egg development, while in men, it supports sperm production. This test is commonly used to assess fertility, evaluate ovarian function, and diagnose conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or menopause, aiding in the management of hormonal imbalances.
What is the FSH Test ?
The FSH test is used to assess Pituitary function, reproductive organ health (Ovaries or Testicles), and Fertility problems. If your child is experiencing early or delayed puberty, then FSH test can be used to make the hormonal assessments.
What is the Purpose of the FSH Test ?
A FSH Test is advised to:
- Determine the cause of infertility
- Diagnose conditions associated with dysfunction of the ovaries or testicles
- Aid in the diagnosis of pituitary or hypothalamus disorders, which can affect FSH production

When is a FSH Test Recommended ?
If you have following symptoms or conditions, then FSH Test is advised:

Preparation for FSH Test
- Unless otherwise directed by your doctor, there is no need for you to make any special preparations before the FSH Test.
- The ideal sample period for females is on Days 2 and 3 of the menstrual cycle. Indicate the menstrual cycle day to your doctor.
- Other blood tests can be carried out in addition to a FSH Test. If your doctor advises you to have multiple tests at once, they may ask you to fast for a specific period of time prior to a blood test.
- Avoid vigorous physical activity before the sample collection.
- Follow the preparatory instructions as guided by your doctor.
