Overview

The Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH) serum test measures the enzyme LDH, which is involved in energy production. It helps diagnose and monitor tissue damage, as elevated levels are associated with conditions like liver disease, myocardial infarction, hemolysis, and certain cancers. LDH is released into the bloodstream from damaged cells in tissues such as the heart, liver, muscles, and lungs.

What is the LDH Test ?

Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH) activity is present in all cells of the body with highest concentrations in Heart, Liver, Muscle, Kidney, Lung, and Erythrocytes. Serum LDH is elevated in a number of clinical conditions. Moderate to slight increases in LDH levels are seen in Myocardial Infarction, Pulmonary Infarction, Pulmonary Embolism, Leukemia, Hemolytic Anemia, Infectious Mononucleosis, progressive muscular Dystrophy (especially in the early and middle stages of the disease), Liver disease, and Kidney disease.

What is the Purpose of the LDH Test ?

There are numerous applications for an LDH test in the diagnosis and surveillance of Medical disorders. Information regarding tissue and cell damage brought on by disease or injury can be obtained by measuring LDH. In order to diagnose and track a variety of illnesses and conditions, an LDH test is usually interpreted in combination with other tests. Testing for LDH may be done:
  • To recognise and monitor illnesses that harm cells
  • To evaluate some cancers' severity and keep an eye on patients while they receive treatment
  • To assess abnormal bodily fluid accumulations

When is a LDH Test Recommended ?

LDH Test is generally recommended if the patient is suffering from following conditions:
  • Heart Disease (related to tissue damage in the heart)
  • Lung Disease (related to tissue damage in the lungs)
  • Kidney Disease (related to tissue damage in the kidneys)
  • Liver Disease
Hepatitis
  • Blood Disorders
Anemia
Hemolysis (Premature breakdown of red blood cells)
  • Infections (causing tissue damage)
  • Organ Failure
  • Drug Reactions (causing tissue damage)
  • Cancers
  • Melanoma
  • Multiple Myeloma
  • Lymphoma
  • Testicular Cancer

What is the Cost of a LDH Test ?

The Price of a LDH Test is Rs. 300. However, cost of the test may fluctuate depending on following factors:
  • Other tests advised along with LDH Test
  • Offers or discounts
  • Empanelment of the patient

Preparation for LDH Test

  • Unless otherwise directed by your doctor, there is no need for you to make any special preparations before the LDH Test.
  • Other blood tests can be carried out in addition to this test. If your doctor advises you to have multiple tests at once, they may ask you to fast for a specific period of time prior to a blood test.
  • Drink adequate water before sample collection.
  • Follow the preparatory instructions as guided by your doctor.

Components of LDH Test

  • LDH: Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH) is a type marker of cell and tissue damage in the body. While it is normal to have some LDH in the body, high levels are associated with many diseases and conditions.

Interpreting the LDH Test Results

Health problems that may cause elevated LDH in the blood include:
  • Shock
  • Ischemic hepatitis
  • Drug reactions
  • Tumor lysis syndrome
  • Severe infections
  • Hemolytic anemia
  • Cancer
  • Muscular dystrophy
  • Acute myocardial infarction

How is the LDH Test Done ?

The Blood Sample for LDH Test is taken in following steps:
  • The area where the needle will be inserted to take your blood is cleaned with an antiseptic alcohol wipe. The hollow on the inside side of the elbow or the tip of the finger are the most common sites for this.
  • A tourniquet or a band is tied around your upper arm to facilitate the access to the vein in your arm.
  • A needle is used to puncture your vein. The blood sample is collected into a test tube attached to the needle. The needle may cause a small pinch or sting when it is inserted.
  • Once the vial or test tube is filled, the blood sample collection for the test is finished and the needle is taken out.
  • Finger pressure is applied on the puncture site to stop the bleeding and the band aid is applied at the site.
