Overview

The folic acid test measures the level of folate (vitamin B9) in the blood, which is essential for DNA synthesis, red blood cell production, and overall cell function. It helps diagnose folate deficiency, which can lead to anemia and complications during pregnancy. A blood sample is analyzed to assess folate levels, aiding in the evaluation of nutritional status and the potential need for supplementation.

What is the Folic Acid Test ?

A Folic Acid Test measures the amount of Folic Acid in the Blood. Folic Acid is one of many B Vitamins. The body needs Folic Acid to make Red Blood Cells (RBC), White Blood Cells (WBC), and Platelets, and for normal growth. Folic Acid also is important for the normal development of a Baby (Fetus).

What is the Purpose of the Folic Acid Test ?

A healthy level of this vital nutrient in the body can be determined by measuring folate in our blood. Typically, folate testing is done to identify and monitor illnesses brought on by Folate Deficiency.
  • Folate Deficiency: The primary purpose of folate testing is to detect low levels of the nutrient or folate deficiency. In response to an abnormal blood test, your doctor may recommend a folate test. If you are exhibiting symptoms that might be related to a folate deficiency, testing may also be recommended.
  • Megaloblastic Anemia: Megaloblastic anemia may be diagnosed if low folate levels are found. Anemia is a disorder in which the body does not produce enough red blood cells. Megaloblastic anemia is brought on by low folate or vitamin B12 levels.
  • Assess the Effectiveness of Treatment: You might undergo folate testing to check if your levels have been restored to normal if you are receiving treatment for a folate deficiency. Because their digestive systems have trouble absorbing folate and other nutrients, some patients with inflammatory bowel disease may undergo routine testing for these nutrients. Additionally, they may be taking medications that can worsen folate absorption, particularly if they also exhibit symptoms of other illnesses like anemia.

When is a Folic Acid Test Recommended ?

The following are a few signs that could indicate the necessity of a Folic Acid Test:
  • Extreme tiredness (Fatigue)
  • Anemia symptoms, such as, Paleness, shortness of breath (Dyspnea), irritability, Dizziness
  • Tender, Red & Tongue
  • Mouth sores/ulcers
  • Reduced sense of taste
  • Neurological symptoms like memory loss, difficulty in concentrating, confusion, problems in making judgments
  • Lack of energy
  • Muscle weakness
  • Depression
  • Weight loss
  • Diarrhea

What is the Cost of the Folic Acid Test ?

The Price of a Folic Acid Test is Rs. 1100. However, cost of the test may fluctuate depending on following factors:
  • Other tests advised along with folic acid test
  • Offers or discounts
  • Empanelment of the patient

Components of Folic Acid Test

  • Folic Acid: Folate, sometimes referred to as folic acid or vitamin B9, is essential for the body's production of DNA, or your individual genetic code

How is the Folic Acid Test Done ?

The Blood Sample for Folic Acid Test is taken in following steps:

  • The area where the needle will be inserted to take your blood is cleaned with an antiseptic alcohol wipe. The hollow on the inside side of the elbow or the tip of the finger are the most common sites for this.
  • A tourniquet or a band is tied around your upper arm to facilitate the access to the vein in your arm.
  • A needle is used to puncture your vein. The blood sample is collected into a test tube attached to the needle. The needle may cause a small pinch or sting when it is inserted.
  • Once the vial or test tube is filled, the blood sample collection for the test is finished and the needle is taken out.
  • Finger pressure is applied on the puncture site to stop the bleeding and the band aid is applied at the site.

Interpreting the Folic Acid Test Results

The normal range of Folic Acid levels in the blood are 6.12 to 38.52 nanomoles per litre (nmol/L) or 2.7 to 17.0 nanogrammes per millilitre (ng/mL).

Low Folic Acid levels may indicate:

  • Malnutrition
  • Malabsorption syndrome such as celiac sprue
  • Poor dietary habits

The test may advised in case of:

  • Anemia that may be due to folate deficiency
  • Megaloblastic anemia
