Overview
An Antinuclear Antibody (ANA) test checks your Blood for ANA. Autoantibodies are a type of Antibodies known as ANAs. Similar to other antibodies our own immune system is responsible for the production of these antibodies. Healthy antibodies defend the body against bacteria and viruses but autoantibodies attack healthy cells and tissues by mistake which leads to various disorders. A Blood sample is usually drawn from your arm for ANA testing. The sort of autoimmune disease that is affecting you can be identified and diagnosed with the use of ANA testing. Having some antinuclear antibodies in your blood is normal. However a lot of them could indicate an autoimmune condition.
Antinuclear Antibody-Indirect Fluorescent Antibody Test uses the Indirect Fluorescent Antibody (IFA) approach which is the gold standard for ANA detection due to its excellent sensitivity and reliability. In order to view bound antibodies under a microscope patient serum is applied to a substrate such as Human Epithelial Cells (HEp-2) and then a fluorescent dye is added. In addition to detecting the presence of antibodies the IFA approach offers patterns (Such as homogenous speckled and nucleolar) that can be used to distinguish between different autoimmune disorders.
Overnight fasting is preferred for this test. The technician will draw blood from your Arms Vein or Finger tip for sample collection. The following details will help you understand about the best ANA - IFA Test in Jaipur.
What is the ANA - IFA Test ?
Evaluating patients at-risk for antinuclear antibodies-associated systemic autoimmune rheumatic disease particularly systemic lupus erythematosus, Sjogren syndrome, and mixed connective tissue disease. ANA may rarely also be detectable following
viral illnesses, in chronic infections, or in patients treated with many different medications.
What is the Purpose of the ANA - IFA Test ?
An ANA test is used to determine, measure, and assess the amount of ANA present in your blood sample. In addition to helping doctors diagnose autoimmune illnesses, ANA testing can reveal information that could help identify your particular autoimmune disorder type. If you experience signs of an autoimmune disease, you can be recommended to undergo an ANA test.

Components of ANA - IFA Test
- ANA: The immune system produces autoantibodies called ANAs (Antinuclear Antibodies), which attack the body's own cell nuclei. Autoimmune illnesses, in which the immune system unintentionally targets healthy tissues, are often related to their presence.
Interpreting the ANA - IFA Test Results
The results of an ANA-IFA test often include a titer, which measures the concentration of antinuclear antibodies in the blood. The titer is determined by diluting the blood with normal saline in sequential ratios (e.g., 1:40, 1:80, 1:160) and observing fluorescence under a microscope.
- Positive ANA Titer: The existence of antinuclear antibodies is often indicated by a titer of 1:60 or higher. Autoimmune disorders are more strongly linked to titers of 1:160 or higher.
- Clinical Significance: While a positive result may indicate an autoimmune condition, it must be evaluated alongside clinical symptoms and other diagnostic tests, as some healthy individuals can have low ANA titers without any disease.
How is the ANA - IFA Test Done ?
The Blood Sample for ANA - IFA Test is taken in following steps:
- The area where the Needle will be inserted to take your blood is cleaned with an Antiseptic Alcohol wipe. The hollow on the inside side of the Elbow or the tip of the Finger are the most common sites for this.
- A tourniquet or a Band is tied around your upper Arm to facilitate the access to the Vein in your Arm.
- A Needle is used to puncture your Vein. The Blood sample is collected into a test tube attached to the needle. The Needle may cause a small pinch or sting when it is inserted.
- Once the vial or test tube is filled, the Blood sample collection for the test is finished and the Needle is taken out.
- Finger pressure is applied on the puncture site to stop the bleeding and the band aid is applied at the site.
