Ketone bodies in peripheral blood consisting of acetone (2%), acetoacetate (20 %) and D-3-hydroxybutyrate (78 %). D-3-hydroxybutyrate is the most abundant & stable ketone body and most sensitive marker for ketosis. Ketosis can be associated with following conditions – diabetes mellitus, hypoglycemia, dieting, epilepsy, severe illness or injury, sepsis. This test can be used for both diagnosis and monitoring of diabetic ketoacidosis.
