Overview

Creatine kinase (CK) is an enzyme that plays a key role in regenerating ATP from ADP during muscle contraction, using creatine phosphate as a reserve. It is primarily found in striated muscle, heart tissue, and the brain. Elevated CK levels can indicate muscle damage and are often measured to assess conditions like myopathy or rhabdomyolysis, which can lead to acute kidney injury.
