SICKLING TEST

Overview

Sickling test is used to detect condition like Sickle cell anemia. Sickle cell diseases encompass a group of condition with autosomal inheritance of abnormal Hb ? chain resulting from a substitution of a valine for glutamic acid.A sickle cell test is a simple blood test used to determine if you have sickle cell disease (SCD) or sickle cell trait. People with SCD have red blood cells (RBCs) that are abnormally shaped. Sickle cells are shaped like a crescent moon. Normal RBCs look like doughnuts. Routinely as part of newborn screening; if you are in a high risk group and were born before newborn screening was mandated and want to know if you have sickle cell disease or are carrying the sickle cell trait; when you have signs and symptoms of anemia or abnormal results from a complete blood count (CBC) and your health care practitioner suspects sickle cell disease or trait.
