Do you know what superfood is and how is it different from ordinary food? Today, the main focus of people is on their health. For this, people maintain their diet and food intake and also go to the gym regularly to stay healthy.

There are many people who suffer from diabetes and therefore, their certain food items one can take to improve their condition. These food items are known as a superfood for diabetes and some of them are listed below.

Non-Starchy vegetables

Vegetables that are high in starch content will have higher GI and they are not suitable for diabetes patients. A diabetic person will have to eat non-starchy vegetables such as asparagus, broccoli, bitter gourd, gourd, spinach, etc. Non-starch vegetables contain vitamins, fibers, and phytochemicals which constitute a heavy diet.

As diabetic patients should avoid staying hungry, these vegetables could keep their appetite under control. These vegetables are also low in calories and carbohydrates. They have a GI level of less than 55.

Greek yogurt

Studies have shown that if you add Greek yogurt to your daily diet, then you will reduce the risk of developing diabetes by 14%. Therefore it is highly recommended to include Greek yogurt full of probiotics, calcium, and protein in your diet.

Cabbage and leafy green vegetables

Bananas, cabbage, and green leafy vegetables are full of vitamins. Vitamin A and K are found in abundance in such vegetables. Keel contains a chemical called glucosinolates that help neutralize the substances which are a cause of cancer. It is also full of potassium and helps to manage blood pressure. Hence, it is called a superfood for diabetes.

Tomatoes

Whether you eat a raw or cooked tomato, it is better than just food for you. Lycopene is an antioxidant and it eliminates the risk of cancer. Along with tomatoes, you should also intake fruits that fall in the non-starchy category and have a low GI. A diabetic patient should eat up to 200 grams of tomatoes every day.

Berries

Diabetes has a negative effect on your eyes, so to avoid this, it is important that you include berries in your diet daily. These fruits filled with vitamin c are considered to be the powerhouse of anti-oxidants. Berries are high in antioxidants and they reduce the risk of heart-related diseases and cancer.

Orange or other citrus fruits

Citrus fruits like oranges and grapes are full of fibers and are said to be the enemies of diabetes. But remember one thing, do not drink their juice but consume them in its raw form. The GI score of orange is 40 while the GI score of orange juice reaches 50. The grape has the lowest GI score of 25.
