Overview

The gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) test measures the level of GGT enzyme found in the liver and bile ducts, in the blood. This test is commonly used to evaluate liver function and detect liver disease, bile duct obstruction, or alcohol abuse. Elevated GGT levels may indicate liver damage, cholestasis, or certain types of liver disease, and it can also be used to monitor the effectiveness of treatment for liver disorders. A blood sample is analyzed to assess GGT levels, providing valuable information about hepatic health.

What is the Gamma GT Test ?

Gamma-Glutamyltransferase (GGT) is primarily present in Kidney, Liver, and Pancreatic Cells. Small amounts are present in other tissues. An elevation of Gamma-Glutamyltransferase (GGT) activity is seen in any and all forms of Liver disease, although the highest elevations are seen in intra- or posthepatic biliary obstruction. Elevated values can also indicate alcoholic cirrhosis or individuals who are heavy drinkers. The finding of increased GGT and Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP) activity is consistent with Hepatobiliary disease. The finding of normal GGT activity and increased ALP activity is consistent with skeletal disease. Males: > or =18 years: 8-61 U/L, Females: > or =18 years: 5-36 U/L.

What is the Purpose of the Gamma GT Test ?

This test is advised for following purposes:
  • The cause of high ALP may be ascertained with the GGT test. Only ALP will be high in bone disease, whereas both GGT and ALP are elevated in bile duct and some liver illnesses. Therefore, bone disease is most likely the reason for a high ALP result if the GGT level is within the standard range.
  • The GGT test can also be used to identify bile duct blockages and liver illness. It is typically advised as a follow-up or in conjunction with other liver tests like bilirubin, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and ALP.
  • If you are undergoing treatment for alcoholism or alcoholic hepatitis, GGT can be used to screen for chronic alcohol abuse (it will be raised in around 75% of chronic drinkers) and to monitor alcohol use and/or abuse.

When is a Gamma GT Test Recommended ?

The following are a few signs that could indicate the need for a Gamma GT Test:
  • Fatigue
  • Weakness
  • Jaundice, a condition that causes your skin and eyes to turn yellow
  • Loss of appetite
  • Abdominal (belly) pain or swelling
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Severe itching

Preparation for Gamma GT Test

  • Overnight fasting is preferred before the Gamma GT Test.
  • Other blood tests can be carried out in addition to a Gamma GT Test. If your doctor advises you to have multiple tests at once, they may ask you to fast for a specific period of time prior to a blood test.
  • Drink adequate water before sample collection.
  • Avoid vigorous physical activity before the sample collection..
  • Follow the preparatory instructions as guided by your doctor.

What is the Cost of the Gamma GT Test ?

The Price of a Gamma GT Test is Rs. 250. However, cost of the test may fluctuate depending on following factors:
  • Other tests advised along with Gamma GT Test
  • Offers or discounts
  • Empanelment of the patient

Components of Gamma GT Test

  • Gamma Gamma Glutamyl Transferase/Transpeptidase (GGT): It is an enzyme that is found in many organs throughout the body, with the highest concentrations found in the liver. It is elevated in the blood in most diseases that cause damage to the liver or bile ducts.

Interpreting the Gamma GT Test Results

The normal range for Gamma-Glutamyl Transferase (GGT) levels can vary by age and gender. Generally, the normal ranges are:
  • Men: 8 to 61 U/L (units per liter)
  • Women: 5 to 36 U/L
  • Children: 5 to 27 U/L
Higher levels may be observed in bone disorders, older adults, or individuals with specific lifestyle factors, such as alcohol consumption. Always consult a healthcare provider for accurate interpretation.

How is the Gamma GT Test Done ?

The Blood Sample for Gamma GT Test is taken in following steps:
  • The area where the needle will be inserted to take your blood is cleaned with an antiseptic alcohol wipe. The hollow on the inside side of the elbow or the tip of the finger are the most common sites for this.
  • A tourniquet or a band is tied around your upper arm to facilitate the access to the vein in your arm.
  • A needle is used to puncture your vein. The blood sample is collected into a test tube attached to the needle. The needle may cause a small pinch or sting when it is inserted.
  • Once the vial or test tube is filled, the blood sample collection for the test is finished and the needle is taken out.
  • Finger pressure is applied on the puncture site to stop the bleeding and the band aid is applied at the site.
