Overview

The IgE (Immunoglobulin E) serum test measures the level of IgE antibodies in the blood, which are typically elevated in cases of allergic reactions or specific immune responses. Elevated IgE levels can indicate allergies, asthma, or parasitic infections. This test helps in diagnosing allergic conditions by identifying abnormal IgE production in response to allergens.

What is the IgE Test ?

Immunoglobulin E (IgE) is one of the 5 classes of immunoglobulins and is defined by the presence of the epsilon heavy chain. IgE exists as a monomer and is present in circulation at very low concentrations, approximately 300-fold lower than that of IgG. The physiologic role of IgE is not well characterized, although it is thought to be involved in defense against parasites, specifically helminthes. For patients with an established diagnosis of allergic disease, measurement of total IgE is necessary for identification of candidates for omalizumab (anti-IgE) therapy and for determination of proper dosing. In addition to specific patient demographics and clinical presentations, candidates for omalizumab must have total IgE concentrations between 30 and 700 KU/L.

What is the Purpose of the IgE Test ?

An IgE Test can be advised by your doctor for following reasons:
  • Diagnosis: Total IgE test is not a confirmatory test. It may be helpful in diagnosing specific health conditions that can cause abnormal total IgE levels such as parasitic infections like allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (an allergic reaction to a type of fungal infection in the lungs), certain kinds of immune disorders or cancers of the immune system.
  • Treatment Planning: This test may be used to assess the potential benefit of specific treatment modalities for individuals with asthma associated with allergies.

When is an IgE Test Recommended ?

This test of recommended if you have or suspected to have following symptoms:
  • Stuffy or runny nose
  • Itchy eyes
  • Watery eyes
  • Sneezing
  • Hives (itchy raised red patches on the skin)
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Coughing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Wheezing

Preparation for IgE Test

  • Unless otherwise directed by your doctor, there is no need for you to make any special preparations before the IgE Test.
  • Other blood tests can be carried out in addition to an IgE Test. If your doctor advises you to have multiple tests at once, they may ask you to fast for a specific period of time prior to a blood test.
  • Drink adequate water before sample collection.
  • Follow the preparatory instructions as guided by your doctor.

What is the Cost of an IgE Test ?

The Price of an IgE Test is Rs. 600. However, cost of the test may fluctuate depending on following factors:
  • Other tests advised along with IgE Test
  • Offers or discounts
  • Empanelment of the patient

Components of IgE Test

  • IgE: Immunoglobulin E (IgE) is an antibody produced by the immune system in response to allergens. It plays a key role in allergic reactions, triggering symptoms like itching, swelling, and hives when it binds to allergens. Elevated IgE levels can indicate allergies, asthma, or other immune-related conditions.

Interpreting the IgE Test Results

  • High IgE Levels: It suggests that you might be allergic to some Allergen. However, a Total IgE Test's results do not reveal what you are Allergic to or how severe your Allergy can be.

How is the IgE Test Done ?

The Blood Sample for IgE Test is taken in following steps:
  • The area where the needle will be inserted to take your blood is cleaned with an antiseptic alcohol wipe. The hollow on the inside side of the elbow or the tip of the finger are the most common sites for this.
  • A tourniquet or a band is tied around your upper arm to facilitate the access to the vein in your arm.
  • A needle is used to puncture your vein. The blood sample is collected into a test tube attached to the needle. The needle may cause a small pinch or sting when it is inserted.
  • Once the vial or test tube is filled, the blood sample collection for the test is finished and the needle is taken out.
  • Finger pressure is applied on the puncture site to stop the bleeding and the band aid is applied at the site.
  • Blood collection typically takes less than five minutes.
  • Temporary throbbing and bruising, as well as mild discomfort or stinging when the needle is inserted, are all possible side effects of a blood draw.
