Overview

The estradiol serum test measures the level of estradiol, a form of estrogen, in the blood. It is commonly used to evaluate reproductive health, monitor ovarian function, and assess conditions related to hormonal imbalances, such as infertility, menstrual disorders, and menopause. Estradiol levels can also provide insights into ovarian reserve, puberty progression, and hormone-related disorders in both men and women.

What is the Estradiol Test ?

Estrogens are responsible for the development and maintenance of female sex organs and female secondary sex characteristics. In conjunction with Progesterone, they participate in regulation of the menstrual cycle, breast and uterine growth, and in the maintenance of pregnancy. Estradiol (E2) concentrations below 200 pg/mL following midcycle stimulation (hCG or follicle-stimulating hormone [FSH]) are associated with very low pregnancy success rates.

What is the Purpose of the Estradiol Test ?

Estrogen Tests are used to detect a deficiency or excess in a woman and to help diagnose a variety of conditions associated with this imbalance. They may also help determine the timing of a woman’s ovulation and monitor the health status of the developing baby and Placenta during pregnancy. In a man, Estrogen testing may be performed to detect a hormone excess and its cause.

When is an Estradiol Test Recommended ?

This test may be ordered to check:
  • How well your Ovaries, Placenta, or Adrenal Glands are functioning
  • If you have signs of an Ovarian Tumor
  • If your periods have stopped (Levels of Estradiol vary, depending on the time of month)
  • If male or female body characteristics are not developing normally
The test may also be ordered to check if:
  • A woman is responding to Fertility treatment
  • Hormone Therapy is working for women in Menopause

Preparation for Estradiol Test

  • Unless otherwise directed by your doctor, there is no need for you to make any special preparations before the Estradiol Test.
  • Other blood tests can be carried out in addition to an Estradiol Test. If your doctor advises you to have multiple tests at once, they may ask you to fast for a specific period of time prior to a blood test.
  • Drink adequate water before sample collection.
  • Follow the preparatory instructions as guided by your doctor.

What is the Cost of an Estradiol Test ?

The Price of an Estradiol Test is Rs. 600. However, cost of the test may fluctuate depending on following factors:
  • Other tests advised along with Estradiol Test
  • Offers or discounts
  • Empanelment of the patient

Components of Estradiol Test

  • Estradiol: This Hormone plays a vital role in regulating the Female reproductive system and maintaining Menstrual health. It supports the development of secondary sexual characteristics and influences Bone density, skin health, and Cardiovascular function. Beyond reproduction, estradiol also impacts mood regulation, cognitive function, and overall well-being.

Interpreting the Estradiol Test Results

The results may vary, depending on the person's Sex and Age.

  • Male: 10 to 50 pg/mL (36.7 to 183.6 pmol/L)
  • Female (Premenopausal): 30 to 400 pg/mL (110 to 1468.4 pmol/L)
  • Female (Postmenopausal): 0 to 30 pg/mL (0 to 110 pmol/L)

Abnormal results may indicate:

  • Early puberty (Precocious puberty) in girls
  • Lack of periods in women (Amenorrhea)
  • Growth of abnormally large breasts in men (Gynecomastia)
  • Reduced function of the ovaries (Ovarian Hypofunction)
  • Rapid weight loss or low body fat
  • Problem with genes, such as Klinefelter syndrome or Turner syndrome

How is the Estradiol Test Done ?

The Blood Sample for Estradiol Test is taken in following steps:

  • The area where the Needle will be inserted to take your Blood is cleaned with an Antiseptic Alcohol wipe. The hollow on the inside side of the elbow or the tip of the Finger are the most common sites for this.
  • A tourniquet or a Band is tied around your upper Arm to facilitate the access to the Vein in your Arm.
  • A Needle is used to puncture your Vein. The Blood Sample is collected into a test tube attached to the Needle. The Needle may cause a small pinch or sting when it is inserted.
  • Once the Vial or test tube is filled, the Blood Sample collection for the test is finished and the Needle is taken out.
  • Finger pressure is applied on the puncture site to stop the bleeding and the band aid is applied at the site.
