Overview
The TSH 3rd Generation test measures the level of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) in the blood with high sensitivity. This test helps assess thyroid function and is crucial for diagnosing and managing thyroid disorders, such as hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. Third-generation TSH testing can detect even small changes in TSH levels, providing a more accurate evaluation of thyroid health. It is often used alongside T3 and T4 tests for a complete thyroid profile.
What is the TSH Test ?
In primary Hypothyroidism, Thyrotropin (TSH) levels will be elevated. In primary Hyperthyroidism, TSH levels will be low. The ability to quantitate circulating levels of TSH is important in evaluating thyroid function. It is especially useful in the differential diagnosis of primary (thyroid) from secondary (pituitary) and tertiary (hypothalamus) hypothyroidism. In primary hypothyroidism, TSH levels are significantly elevated, while in secondary and tertiary hypothyroidism,
TSH levels are low or normal. Elevated or low TSH in the context of normal free thyroxine is often referred to as subclinical hypo- or hyperthyroidism, respectively.
What is the Purpose of the TSH Test ?
TSH Test is advised to for following analysis:
- Diagnosing an underactive or overactive thyroid gland
- Screening for thyroid disease before it causes symptoms (especially in newborns)
- Evaluation of a thyroid nodule, a lump on the thyroid gland
- Evaluation of a goiter, which is an enlargement of the thyroid gland
- Monitoring your response to treatment for hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, or another thyroid condition

- A tourniquet or a band is tied around your upper arm to facilitate the access to the vein in your arm.
- A needle is used to puncture your vein. The blood sample is collected into a test tube attached to the needle. The needle may cause a small pinch or sting when it is inserted.
- Once the vial or test tube is filled, the blood sample collection for the test is finished and the needle is taken out.
