What is the Amylase Test ?

Amylase is produced primarily by the exocrine pancreas where the enzyme is synthesized by the acinar cells and then secreted into the intestinal tract by way of the pancreatic duct system. It assist in diagnosis and management of pancreatitis and evaluation of pancreatic function.

What is the Purpose of the Amylase Test ?

The Pancreas, an Organ situated behind the stomach, is responsible for producing enzymes and other key hormones. A condition known as Acute Pancreatitis causes the pancreas to swell and become inflamed. Sometimes, chronic pancreatitis—a persistent medical condition that may permanently damage the pancreas—is diagnosed using an amylase test. Other medical disorders that can be diagnosed with the amylase test include:
  • Intestinal obstruction or injury
  • Peritonitis

Components of Amylase Test

  • Amylase: An Enzyme called Amylase, or specialized Protein, aids in the breakdown of Carbohydrates. Your Pancreas and Salivary Glands synthesize the majority of the Amylase in your body. Your Blood and Urine may naturally have just a small amount of Amylase. However, too much or too little could indicate a medical ailment or a problem with the Salivary Glands or Pancreas.

Interpreting the Amylase Test Results

In a Blood Sample, the range is about 30 to 110 U/L (units per liter). If your Blood Amylase level is low, that may indicate that the Pancreas is unable to make enough of the Protein. Following are possible reasons:
  • Chronic (ongoing) pancreatitis
  • Liver failure
  • Cystic fibrosis
High levels may indicate following conditions:
  • Acute Pancreatitis
  • Infection
  • Poor Kidney function
  • Cancer of the Pancreas, Lung, Breast, Colon, or Ovary
  • Mumps
  • Swollen Salivary Glands
  • Drug use
  • Appendicitis
Your doctor will order more tests if they feel it is necessary.

How is the Amylase Test Test Done ?

The Blood Sample for Amylase Test is taken in following steps:
  • The area where the needle will be inserted to take your blood is cleaned with an antiseptic alcohol wipe. The hollow on the inside side of the elbow or the tip of the finger are the most common sites for this.
  • A tourniquet or a band is tied around your upper arm to facilitate the access to the vein in your arm.
  • A needle is used to puncture your vein. The blood sample is collected into a test tube attached to the needle. The needle may cause a small pinch or sting when it is inserted.
  • Once the vial or test tube is filled, the blood sample collection for the test is finished and the needle is taken out.
  • Finger pressure is applied on the puncture site to stop the bleeding and the band aid is applied at the site.
