Overview

The FSH (serum) test measures follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) levels in the blood, which is essential for reproductive function. In women, FSH regulates the menstrual cycle and egg development, while in men, it supports sperm production. This test is commonly used to assess fertility, evaluate ovarian function, and diagnose conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or menopause, aiding in the management of hormonal imbalances.

What is the FSH Test ?

The FSH test is used to assess Pituitary function, reproductive organ health (Ovaries or Testicles), and Fertility problems. If your child is experiencing early or delayed puberty, then FSH test can be used to make the hormonal assessments.

What is the Purpose of the FSH Test ?

A FSH Test is advised to:
  • Determine the cause of infertility
  • Diagnose conditions associated with dysfunction of the ovaries or testicles
  • Aid in the diagnosis of pituitary or hypothalamus disorders, which can affect FSH production
In Women, this test is useful in:
  • Evaluating menstrual irregularities
  • Predicting menopause or perimenopause
In Men, this test is useful in:
  • To determine the reason for a low sperm count in men
In Children, this test is useful in:
  • Diagnosing delayed or precocious (early) puberty

When is a FSH Test Recommended ?

If you have following symptoms or conditions, then FSH Test is advised:
  • Irregular or Absent Menstrual Cycles
  • Infertility or Difficulty in Conceiving
  • Signs of Menopause (hot flashes, night sweats)
  • Early or Premature Menopause
  • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
  • Ovarian Dysfunction or Insufficiency
  • Abnormal Hormone Levels (from previous tests)
  • Low Sperm Count or Male Infertility
  • Pituitary Disorders or Tumors
  • Evaluation during Fertility Treatments

Preparation for FSH Test

  • Unless otherwise directed by your doctor, there is no need for you to make any special preparations before the FSH Test.
  • The ideal sample period for females is on Days 2 and 3 of the menstrual cycle. Indicate the menstrual cycle day to your doctor.
  • Other blood tests can be carried out in addition to a FSH Test. If your doctor advises you to have multiple tests at once, they may ask you to fast for a specific period of time prior to a blood test.
  • Avoid vigorous physical activity before the sample collection.
  • Follow the preparatory instructions as guided by your doctor.

What is the Cost of a FSH Test ?

The Price of a FSH Test is Rs. 1200. However, cost of the test may fluctuate depending on following factors:
  • Other tests advised along with FSH Test
  • Offers or discounts
  • Empanelment of the patient

Components of FSH Test

  • FSH: One important hormone that controls the reproductive system is follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). It controls the menstrual cycle and promotes ovarian follicles to produce eggs in women, while it aids in the production of sperm in men. Menopause, fertility problems, and other reproductive health conditions may be indicated by abnormal FSH levels.

Interpreting the FSH Test Results

Normal FSH levels will differ, depending on a person's age and sex.

Male:

  • Before Puberty: 0 to 5.0 mIU/mL (0 to 5.0 IU/L)
  • During Puberty: 0.3 to 10.0 mIU/mL (0.3 to 10.0 IU/L)
  • Adult: 1.5 to 12.4 mIU/mL (1.5 to 12.4 IU/L)

Female:

  • Before Puberty: 0 to 4.0 mIU/mL (0 to 4.0 IU/L)
  • During Puberty: 0.3 to 10.0 mIU/mL (0.3 to 10.0 IU/L)
  • Women who are still Menstruating: 4.7 to 21.5 mIU/mL (4.5 to 21.5 IU/L)
  • After Menopause: 25.8 to 134.8 mIU/mL (25.8 to 134.8 IU/L)

High FSH levels in women may be present:

  • During or after Menopause, including premature Menopause
  • When receiving Hormone Therapy
  • Due to certain types of Tumor in the Pituitary Gland
  • Due to Turner Syndrome

Low FSH levels in women may be present due to:

  • Being very underweight or having had recent rapid weight loss
  • Not producing eggs (not ovulating)
  • Parts of the brain (the pituitary gland or hypothalamus) not producing normal amounts of some or all of its hormones
  • Pregnancy

High FSH levels in men may mean the testicles are not functioning correctly due to:

  • Advancing age (Male Menopause)
  • Damage to testicles caused by Alcohol overuse, Chemotherapy, or Radiation
  • Problems with genes, such as Klinefelter syndrome
  • Treatment with hormones
  • Certain tumors in the pituitary gland

How is the FSH Test Done ?

The Blood Sample for FSH Test is taken in following steps:
  • Give sample on the day specified by your doctor
  • The area where the needle will be inserted to take your blood is cleaned with an antiseptic alcohol wipe. The hollow on the inside side of the elbow or the tip of the finger are the most common sites for this.
  • A tourniquet or a band is tied around your upper arm to facilitate the access to the vein in your arm.
  • A needle is used to puncture your vein. The blood sample is collected into a test tube attached to the needle. The needle may cause a small pinch or sting when it is inserted.
  • Once the vial or test tube is filled, the blood sample collection for the test is finished and the needle is taken out.
  • Finger pressure is applied on the puncture site to stop the bleeding and the band aid is applied at the site.
