Overview
The Prolactin (PRL) test measures the level of prolactin in the serum, a hormone produced by the pituitary gland that plays a key role in lactation and reproductive health. - Prolactin: Prolactin is a Hormone produced by the Pituitary Gland, a small Gland at the base of the Brain. Prolactin influences numerous bodily functions. Interpreting the Prolactin Test Results
Following are the normal Prolactin Levels are:
- Men: less than 20 ng/mL (425 µg/L)
- Nonpregnant Women: less than 25 ng/mL (25 µg/L)
- Pregnant Women: 80 to 400 ng/mL (80 to 400 µg/L)
Higher-than-normal Prolactin Levels may indicate following conditions:
- Prolactinoma or another Pituitary disorder
- Hypothalamus disorder
- Hypothyroidism
- Cirrhosis (scarring of the liver)
- Kidney disease
- Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
Lower-than-normal Prolactin Levels are rare but may indicate a Pituitary disorder.
How is the Prolactin Test Done ?
The Blood Sample for Prolactin Test is taken in following steps:
- The area where the Needle will be inserted to take your Blood is cleaned with an Antiseptic Alcohol wipe. The hollow on the inside side of the Elbow or the tip of the Finger are the most common sites for this.
- A tourniquet or a band is tied around your upper arm to facilitate the access to the Vein in your Arm.
- A Needle is used to puncture your Vein. The Blood sample is collected into a test tube attached to the Needle. The Needle may cause a small pinch or sting when it is inserted.
- Once the Vial or test Tube is filled, the Blood sample collection for the test is finished and the Needle is taken out.
- Finger pressure is applied on the puncture site to stop the bleeding and the Band aid is applied at the site.
