Overview

Absolute eosinophil count is increased in allergic or atopic disease, infectious disorders (including parasites), medications, immunologic reactions, skin disorders, pulmonary syndromes, rheumatologic diseases, myeloproliferative neoplasms and secondary to other malignancies.

What is the T.E.C. Test ?

Absolute eosinophil count is increased in allergic or atopic disease, infectious disorders (including parasites), medications, immunologic reactions, skin disorders, pulmonary syndromes, rheumatologic diseases, myeloproliferative neoplasms and secondary to other malignancies.

What is the Purpose of the T.E.C. Test ?

The Total Eosinophil Count Test, or T.E.C. Test, counts the amount of White Blood Cells called Eosinophils in the blood. As they react to Autoimmune Disorders, Malignancies, Microbial Infections, and Allergy reactions, Eosinophils are vital components of the Immune system. They only proliferate when the body needs them to protect it, like during an Allergic reaction or an infection. Eosinophil counts usually drop back to minute levels after serving their protective purpose. The T.E.C. Test aids in the assessment of the severity and directs treatment decisions for a number of illnesses, including Eosinophilic Disorders, Allergies, Asthma, and Infections.

When is a T.E.C. Test Recommended ?

This Test of recommended if you have or suspected to have following conditions:
  • Acute hypereosinophilic syndrome, a rare condition that’s similar to leukemia and can be life-threatening
  • Autoimmune conditions
  • An allergic disorder like asthma or hay fever
  • An infection caused by a parasite or fungus
  • Asthma
  • Early stages of Cushing’s disease, a rare condition that can happen if you have too much of a hormone called cortisol in your blood
  • A reaction to certain medications
  • Eczema (itchy, inflamed skin)
  • Leukemia and other blood disorders

Preparation for T.E.C. Test

  • Unless otherwise directed by your doctor, there is no need for you to make any special preparations before the T.E.C. Test.
  • Other blood tests can be carried out in addition to a T.E.C. Test. If your doctor advises you to have multiple tests at once, they may ask you to fast for a specific period of time prior to a blood test.
  • Drink adequate water before sample collection.
  • Follow the preparatory instructions as guided by your doctor.

What is the Cost of a T.E.C. Test ?

The Price of a T.E.C. Test is Rs. 100. However, cost of the test may fluctuate depending on following factors:
  • Other tests advised along with T.E.C. Test
  • Offers or discounts
  • Empanelment of the patient

Components of T.E.C. Test

  • Total Eosinophil Count: A eosinophil count is a measurement of the body's eosinophil number. Eosinophils are a kind of white blood cell that aids in the body's defense against bacterial and viral illnesses. If an individual exhibits symptoms of specific infections or allergic reactions, a blood test for eosinophil count may be necessary. Doctors may advise the eosinophil test if someone has abnormal results from another blood test.

Interpreting the T.E.C. Test Results

A lab technician will stain a sample of your blood with a special stain. This allows them to count the number of eosinophils in each of your 100 cells. To obtain your absolute eosinophil count, they will multiply that proportion by the number of white blood cells in your body. Eosinophilia may of following types:
  • Mild: (500–1,500 cells/mm3)
  • Moderate: (1,500–5,000 cells/mm3)
  • Severe: (greater than 5,000 cells/mm3)

How is the T.E.C. Test Done ?

The Blood Sample for T.E.C. Test is taken in following steps:
  • The area where the needle will be inserted to take your blood is cleaned with an antiseptic alcohol wipe. The hollow on the inside side of the elbow or the tip of the finger are the most common sites for this.
  • A tourniquet or a band is tied around your upper arm to facilitate the access to the vein in your arm.
  • A needle is used to puncture your vein. The blood sample is collected into a test tube attached to the needle. The needle may cause a small pinch or sting when it is inserted.
  • Once the vial or test tube is filled, the blood sample collection for the test is finished and the needle is taken out.
  • Finger pressure is applied on the puncture site to stop the bleeding and the band aid is applied at the site.
  • Blood collection typically takes less than five minutes.
  • Temporary throbbing and bruising, as well as mild discomfort or stinging when the needle is inserted, are all possible side effects of a blood draw.
