ESR is an acute-phase reactant that indicates the presence and severity of inflammation. It measures how quickly red blood cells settle in a blood sample. Elevated ESR levels can occur in conditions like infections, rheumatoid arthritis, rheumatic fever, vascular diseases, inflammatory bowel disease, heart disease, kidney disease, and certain cancers.

What is the ESR Test ?

ESR is an acute phase reactant which indicates the presence and intensity of an inflammatory process. An erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) is a type of blood test that measures how quickly erythrocytes (Red Blood Cells) settle at the bottom of a test tube that contains a blood sample. A high value of ESR can be seen in the following conditions: Infection, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Rheumatic Fever, Vascular Disease, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Heart Disease, Kidney Disease, certain Cancers, and other chronic inflammatory conditions.

An ESR Test can be advised by your doctor for following reasons:
  • Diagnosis: An ESR test by itself cannot diagnose illnesses because it might be abnormal for a variety of health issues. An ESR test, however, may assist in the detection of infections, Autoimmune illnesses, Blood abnormalities, Kidney disease, and many other health problems.
  • Monitoring: Periodically, an ESR test may be performed to monitor changes in inflammatory health conditions throughout time. It can also be used to evaluate how well a patient is responding to particular types of Therapies.

When is an ESR Test Recommended ?

This test of recommended if you have or suspected to have following symptoms or conditions:
  • Headaches
  • Unexplained fever

  • Joint stiffness
  • Neck or shoulder pain
  • Loss of appetite
  • Anemia

  • Other blood tests can be carried out in addition to an ESR Test. If your doctor advises you to have multiple tests at once, they may ask you to fast for a specific period of time prior to a blood test.
  • Drink adequate water before sample collection.
  • Follow the preparatory instructions as guided by your doctor.

What is the Cost of an ESR Test ?

The Price of an ESR Test is Rs. 130. However, cost of the test may fluctuate depending on following factors:
  • Other tests advised along with ESR Test
  • Offers or discounts
  • Empanelment of the patient

Components of ESR Test

  • ESR: An Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR) is a blood test that is often advised to determine if you have inflammation in your body. Inflammation is the immune system's reaction to wounds, infections, and a wide range of illnesses, such as Blood diseases, some Malignancies, and Immune System disorders.

Interpreting the ESR Test Results

For Males, the typical reference range for ESR values is 1-13 mm/hr, while for females, it is 1-20 mm/hr. However, these values may change based on the individual's age. Individuals who have ESR readings that are not within the normal range may be suffering from some inflammatory medical condition. A high ESR test result may be from a condition that causes inflammation, such as:
  • Arteritis
  • Arthritis
  • Systemic Vasculitis
  • Polymyalgia Rheumatica
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease
  • Kidney disease
  • Infection
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis and other autoimmune diseases
  • Heart disease
  • Certain Cancers
A low ESR test result may be caused by conditions such as:
A Blood disorder, such as:
  • Polycythemia
  • Sickle cell disease (SCD)
  • Leukocytosis, a very high white blood cell count (WBC)
Heart failure
Certain kidney and liver problems

How is the ESR Test Done ?

The Blood Sample for ESR Test is taken in following steps:
  • The area where the needle will be inserted to take your blood is cleaned with an antiseptic alcohol wipe. The hollow on the inside side of the elbow or the tip of the finger are the most common sites for this.
  • A tourniquet or a band is tied around your upper arm to facilitate the access to the vein in your arm.
  • A needle is used to puncture your vein. The blood sample is collected into a test tube attached to the needle. The needle may cause a small pinch or sting when it is inserted.
  • Once the vial or test tube is filled, the blood sample collection for the test is finished and the needle is taken out.
  • Finger pressure is applied on the puncture site to stop the bleeding and the band aid is applied at the site.
  • Blood collection typically takes less than five minutes.
  • Temporary throbbing and bruising, as well as mild discomfort or stinging when the needle is inserted, are all possible side effects of a blood draw.
