Overview

Syphilis a sexually transmitted infection brought on by the Bacteria Treponema Pallidum can be detected early by getting the RPR (Rapid Plasma Reagin) and VDRL (Venereal Disease Research Laboratory) tests done. Such early detection aids in getting effective treatment later on. These are non-treponemal tests. Therefore these tests can detect Antibodies produced by the body in response to the infection rather than the Bacteria itself. For screening diagnosing and monitoring the effectiveness of treatment doctors often advise these tests on a regular basis. Syphilis testing is often advised if someone is having symptoms suggestive of this infection. This testing is also recommended for screening this disease in certain groups of people who are at an increased risk of infection or of transmitting the infection to others. The significance of these tests lies in the fact that these tests can identify syphilis in its early stages therefore can aid in preventing severe complications such as Neurological Cardiovascular and Congenital syphilis if left untreated. These assays are crucial tools to manage and stop the spread of syphilis because of their ease of use cost-effectiveness and rapid results. However further testing is needed to establish a definitive diagnosis with Treponemal tests if these tests come out positive. No special preparation is needed for this test. The technician will draw Blood from your Arms Vein or Finger tip for sample collection. The following details will help you understand about the best RPR/VDRL Test in Jaipur.

What is the RPR/VDRL Test ?

The VDRL Test checks blood or Spinal Fluid for an Antibody that can be produced in people who have syphilis. This Antibody is not produced as a reaction to syphilis specifically, so the test result could be abnormal for reasons other than syphilis. Rapid Plasma Reagin (RPR) test. Negative: Nontreponemal antibodies not detected. Positive: Specimen reflexed to determine rapid plasma reagin titer.

What is the Purpose of the RPR/VDRL Test ?

RPR/VDRL Test is often advised for following purposes:
  • Diagnosis: If you have symptoms or indicators that point to syphilis, diagnostic testing is advised. Doctors may advise testing for syphilis even in cases when symptoms are not severe or specific to the infection because it can cause a wide range of symptoms. Two tests are typically needed to diagnose syphilis: an initial screening (non-treponemal tests) and a confirmatory test (treponemal tests).
  • Screening: Syphilis screening includes screening for the infection in individuals who do not exhibit any clinical symptoms. Such screening is important for both the individuals who are more likely to spread the infection to others and those who are at a high risk of getting syphilis.
  • Monitoring: Syphilis treatment treatment is important to ensure you are responding to the prescribed treatment.

Components of RPR/VDRL Test

  • RPR: RPR (Rapid Plasma Reagin) is a screening test for syphilis. It measures substances (Proteins) called antibodies that are present in the blood of people who may have the disease. The RPR test uses a card-based method where results are visualized through clumping (flocculation) on a test card.
  • VDRL: By detecting antibodies generated in response to the infection, the VDRL test, a non-treponemal screening method, can help in syphilis detection even at the earliest stage. The VDRL test is performed on microscope slides and requires observation under a microscope to detect the reaction.

Interpreting the RPR/VDRL Test Results

Nontreponemal test results can be reported as either negative (non-reactive) or positive (reactive). If the test is positive, the outcomes might also reveal how much antibody was in the sample that was tested.

You may have syphilis if your nontreponemal test result is positive. A positive diagnosis needs to be confirmed by a treponemal test. If your test is negative, you might not have syphilis, but if you have symptoms, you might need to get tested again.

How is the RPR/VDRL Test Test Done? How is the RPR/VDRL Test Test Done ?

The Blood Sample for RPR/VDRL Test is taken in following steps:
  • The area where the needle will be inserted to take your blood is cleaned with an antiseptic alcohol wipe. The hollow on the inside side of the elbow or the tip of the finger are the most common sites for this.
  • A tourniquet or a band is tied around your upper arm to facilitate the access to the vein in your arm.
  • A needle is used to puncture your vein. The blood sample is collected into a test tube attached to the needle. The needle may cause a small pinch or sting when it is inserted.
  • Once the vial or test tube is filled, the blood sample collection for the test is finished and the needle is taken out.
